How difficult should your induction be for your facility?

If there was an area in the market that I would call hot today it would be distribution centres. Distribution centres are more commonly referred to as DC’s. As technology has improved distribution centres have centralised with just-in-time delivery to stores. Distribution centres are much larger than ever before with more people transactions daily than previously happened in a month. People transactions include employees, management, visitors and contractors.

Makes me think of some of the largest buildings in the world with the Boeing Everett factory still today being the largest building in the world, the facility covers about 4,300,000 ft.². This allows the 767, 777 and the huge 787 dream liner to be assembled at this massive plant. One of the oldest largest buildings in the world is the Meyer Werft which was founded in 1795 and handles some of the world’s largest cruise ships. This facility is 678,000 ft.². The Airbus 380 factory is about 1,320,000 ft.². One of the largest brands that many mums and dads would know is the Target import warehouse in Washington which boasts 2,000,000 ft.² of space.

With all of these people movements in and out of the distribution centres it is very important that the people coming on site are compliant with the safety rules for the location. Visitors would normally complete a small induction before entering a facility with their host. Contractors may complete an induction before arriving on site but can also complete a small induction on site on arrival.

This creates the question how difficult should your induction be?

and…

How do I know if a contractor has completed their induction and is compliant when they arrive on site?

There are many vendor compliance software products on the market today, many more than were traditionally available due to the cloud. They are all designed to reduce risk. Some of the more popular ones I will list below

  • Browz
  • iPro
  • Trade Interchange
  • Beeline

There are literally dozens more. The question we seem to be getting asked from companies that are using these products is while we have the ability to know if the insurance of the supplier is up to date and the inductions have been completed when a contractor walks on site we don’t actually check because we don’t have a way of checking, what we need is a sign in station that connects back to the insurance and induction database.

What if when the contractor signed in their presence on site they were automatically checked against any details held against the contractor and his company giving immediate denial of access for any infringements or non-compliance….. Would this be a good idea?

As we get more questions from companies using these more complex compliance products we have discovered a separation from the rest of the business around the compliance of every single person visiting a location including visitors, employees and contractors.

Why just check on the compliance of contractors?

Would you like to know who is on your location and if they are complaint including employees, visitors and contractors?
