When we talk to companies making inquiries for Visitor Management we find many companies are running some part of the business on spreadsheets, it could be employee time keeping, finance, manufacturing, stock takes the list of uses for spreadsheets in business today is endless. I have a spreadsheet for the kids soccer, kids AFL and kids cricket, if you coach kids in sport like I do I bet you have many spreadsheets like me.
We have even come across companies running in/out spreadsheets for manual visitor management on an iPad or Tablet. Over the past few years as Google Docs has gather more momentum with thousands of companies moving over to cloud spreadsheets more people have access than ever before to spreadsheets.
When we talk to contractor management customers we see a high use of spreadsheets, from managing the contractors and employees for start and finish times right through to running the entire project for smaller companies. Even the largest construction companies have staff running spreadsheets. I remember on one large project with hundreds of contractors a few years ago where thousands of dollars of equipment was lent out to employees and contractors on a daily basis including radios and other electrical equipment each worth more than $700. Tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment was being managed on a spreadsheet.
We assisted this construction company with a biometric tool check in and check out station that gave instant date driven reporting on all tools out on the job, every tool went with an employee or contractor only after the employee and contractor would first be identified as authorised in the system to take tools, this was several years ago and spreadsheet guru has come a long way since then.
Over the years I have seen many companies manage induction expiry dates through spreadsheets that took constant checking of the data to confirm inductions were still valid, monthly checks of the data by expiry dates is common, just recently on a large project in QLD the customer prior to purchasing contractor management software estimated hundreds of hours a year went into maintaining the spreadsheets used to manage contractors compliance including inductions.
A very close friend of mine actually makes his living from spreadsheets, for more than a decade Les worked for AMEX manipulating data in spreadsheets and now does the same thing for St George bank. Les is trained and works with spreadsheets every day but even Les hit hurdles with his spreadsheets, so dont be worried if you are unable to get your spreadsheet doing what you want.
