Tracking vehicles carrying dangerous goods
We thought this was a cracker when first asked, what could you possible want to track on a vehicle…. We already track the contractor or driver of the vehicle with all the appropriate licenses and expire dates including inductions. We were asked could we actually track the vehicle details as well as the driver details, in other words could we notify an operator if a vehicle dangerous goods license had expired.
Great question we thought and as soon as we started to research dangerous goods vehicle licensing we were blown away with the options state by state across the country. Certainly got us all wondering in the office how do people manage this manually……
The request we received was to stop a tanker filling with dangerous goods if the vehicle did not pass the strict criteria set down for the vehicle based on state by state government licensing….further more it was explained how an operator with permission to release the goods through the driver into the tanker could not really know any information on the vehicle let alone the driver of the vehicle, adding to the problems a driver could over time turn up in different vehicles.
